Stacey Gabriel is responsible for overseeing the Broad Institute's portfolio of flagship projects aimed at discovering the genetic
basis of common human diseases and cancers through the application of genomic tools. These projects focus on specific disease areas
of high interest to the Broad community as well as the development of new capabilities and tools. Stacey joined the Broad ten years
ago, then part of the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research, and now oversees a staff of approximately 50 lab
technicians, project and lab managers, software engineers and data analysts devoted to SNP genotyping, SNP discovery and production
activities related to genetic analysis.
Stacey is the principal investigator of four active NIH grants dedicated to the creation of centralized large-scale resources
for human genetics. These include the NHBLI Whole Exome Sequencing Program; the NHGRI Genes and Environment Initiative;
the NHBLI Candidate Gene Resource Project for large cohort studies; and the NCRR Genotyping Center. She successfully led
the Broad Institute's contributions to the International HapMap Project and served as a member of the project's steering
committee, contributing to the design of protocols for genotyping as well as methods for quality assessment and quality control,
data sharing and transfer, and human studies approval. She currently serves as a member of the steering committee for the
1000 Genomes Project and is also co-chair of the project's production subcommittee.
Stacey received her B.S. in molecular biology from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993 and Ph.D. in human genetics from
Case Western Reserve University (1998). She trained in human genetics under Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti.
