Welcome to Genome Canada's GE3LS webpage, now directly accessible from our home page. This bold move to emphasize GE3LS right up front signals how integral GE3LS research is to the advancement and application of genomics science in Canada.

GE3LS stands for genomics and its related ethical, economic, environmental, legal and social aspects. GE3LS research complements genomics projects by addressing questions that lie at the interface between science and society. GE3LS research is carried out by academic researchers from an ever-expanding range of perspectives and disciplinary backgrounds, including: social sciences, law, philosophy, bioethics, anthropology, business ethics, commerce, economics, environmental and conservation sciences, animal welfare, communications and journalism studies, political science and public policy. We recognize that's a mouthful! So in an attempt to explain GE3LS research in more dynamic terms, we asked a few students across the country what GE3LS research means to them. The animated banner you see at the top of this page contains some of the descriptive words we heard, and represents our first take at describing GE3LS. If there are descriptors you think are missing, please let us know.

Just like a Window

In this first phase of development, the Genome Canada GE3LS webpage is intended to provide visitors with a useful and accessible window onto GE3LS-related research and initiatives happening across the country. Just like a window, it is also intended to be clear and transparent, shedding light on GE3LS related activities at Genome Canada.

In future phases of development, we hope to expand the viewing pane of this window to attract a broader range of users, including researchers from a wide array of disciplinary backgrounds, students, policy makers, general public, interested media and technology end-users.

Our ultimate goal is to see this GE3LS window eventually transform into an open doorway, inviting users from across the country to join together in a common virtual space to interact in real time, network with colleagues and exchange views on GE3LS research and related issues.
