Of all the areas where genomics has the potential for huge impact, nothing will be more meaningful to humans everywhere than its affect on health research. Crack the secret of the genome and you may begin to discover the origins of disease: that’s potentially where current genomics research is going. Though we are only at the beginning of this study, genomics has already begun assessing the causes of autism, finding the source of cancer and enabling the early detection of colorectal tumours. The Haplotype Map of the Human Genome could soon allow people to know their own their genetic predisposition to diseases or addictions. Genomics is greatly contributing to our knowledge of human health and understanding of disease.
