Genome Canada, the country’s leader in harnessing the transformative power of genomics research and innovation, is delighted to announce that it has, for the second time, been named Top Employer for the National Capital Region.

Mediacorp Canada Inc., organizer of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, recently revealed the 2024 winners, celebrating them in a special magazine and featuring them in the Ottawa Citizen.

"Our mission to leverage genomics for the promotion of healthy populations, a prosperous society, and a sustainable environment is made possible through the invaluable contributions of exceptional individuals. The commitment and energy of our employees are at the very heart of our organization and drive our impact. We are honoured to win this award for a second time.”

Genome Canada is strongly committed to maintaining an inclusive and supportive work culture for our 22 full-time staff. In practice, this means embedding inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) and Indigenous truth, reconciliation and engagement (ITRE) in everything we do. It also means providing ongoing training for employees in these areas to accelerate our collective journey.

Genome Canada values the benefits of a hybrid work environment to support Ottawa-based staff as well as remote staff. We have recently renovated our physical space to include a more open-concept environment, ergonomic improvements such as adjustable desks and chairs, and multiple collaborative spaces to encourage teamwork and connection. We have tools and technology in place to support remote working, but also encourage regular in-person collaboration and all-staff in-person retreats and teambuilding events several times a year.

We prioritize work-life balance, offering flexible hours and emphasizing the importance of physical and mental health. Our active social and well-being committees help keep staff connected, engaged and brimming with team spirit. Officevibe, our employee engagement tool, allows staff to send digital “Good Vibes” feedback/encouragement cards to their colleagues. We strive to provide a physically, mentally and psychologically safe work environment.

Genome Canada offers a comprehensive health and dental plan, with premiums paid by the employer; an employee-directed health care spending account; an annual performance award plan and family-friendly benefits such as a pregnancy/parental leave top-up.

In the National Capital Region competition, the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers evaluated employers using criteria such as physical workspace; work atmosphere and social activities; health; financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and community involvement.
