Since the sequence map of the human genome, the cost of sequencing the genome of an individual has fallen rapidly. This has resulted in a tremendous increase in the amount of human genomic data available to the international research community for the advancement of biomedical research. Yet, there is an absence of international mechanisms to support researchers in ensuring ethical and legal interoperability.

It is with deep regret that Genome Canada has learned of the recent passing of Dr. Anthony Pawson. Dr. Pawson was truly a star in Canadian genomics research. His contributions to the scientific community and humanity earned him international renown, including the prestigious Kyoto Prize in 2008. In particular, he was recognized for his influential work on how human cells communicate with one another.

Media Release, Calgary - Genome Alberta is pleased to announce on behalf of our funding partners the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, Genome Canada, Genome Quebec, and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs, the results of our collective funding competition for the rapid detection of pathogenic E.coli. Each of the two successful applications will receive $500,000 in new funding.

The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced the launch of a new Genome Canada program designed to move genomics-based solutions from laboratories to the marketplace. The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) is also intended to stimulate investment from private and public partners to fund projects that address real world challenges and opportunities in the field of genomics.
